2000 will be the Lib Dems' Year of Opportunity12.00.00am GMT Thu 23rd Dec 1999 Eastern England's Liberal Democrat Euro-MP Andrew Duff New Year Message is that 2000 will be the year of opportunity for Liberal Democrats. In London's mayoral election we have, in Susan Kramer, the only credible candidate. In Eastern England, it is Liberal Democrat councillors who, again and again, are driving the agenda for an improved environment and the decentralisation of power from Whitehall. Over reform of the House of Lords, it is Lib Dem proposals 'for a regional and democratic basis for the new chamber' that will have made the most impact. Mr Duff commented; "Liberal Democrats are also fighting those who would put Britain's place in Europe at risk. "The Labour government is in danger of losing its way in the European Union. "On one hand, it is at odds with Britain's EU partners in a number of areas, such as the consolidation of the single market. On the other hand it is part of a cosy consensus of EU governments on the issues of citizens' rights and parliamentary democracy when it should be out in front, arguing for reform. "On the top priority of Britain's membership of the single currency, the cabinet seem paralysed with indecisiveness. "In short, Mr Blair has got his European priorities all wrong. "Meanwhile the Tories are lost in a fog of petty nationalism, apeing tabloid prejudices. "A return to Tory Britain would be to jettison what remains of British influence in European and world affairs. "Under the new leadership of Charles Kennedy, we will remain committed to public service at home and the true national interest in Europe."
