Andrew Duff MEP for East of England

East of England Liberal Democrat Euro MP Andrew Duff is today taking part in a debate on the question 'How Christian is Europe?'.

4.55.08pm GMT Tue 20th Feb 2007

His sparring partner will be Sir Stephen Wall, former EU advisor to Tony Blair. The debate takes place at St Mary le Bow Church, Cheapside in the City of London at lunchtime.

Andrew Duff will argue that the churches have not made a significant contribution to modern European integration. He will defend the European constitution, which makes a strong distinction between the secular powers of the EU and the role of religion. He will argue that Europe's 20 million Moslems need to experience a 'reformation' comparable to that experienced in the past by Western Christianity. 'Without the reformation there would have been no enlightenment. The European Union's values today were forged in the Enlightenment'.
